The D/OTEC (Distance and Online Theological Education Competences) is based on a competence framework that was developed in 2021 by a group of global experts in distance and online theological education.  The courses are offered at foundational and advanced level and develop the seven main categories of Context, Pedagogy, Learning Design, Professionality, Community, Technology and Communication.

Making the Most of Online Platforms and Tools

This is one of the seven, advanced level nano-courses in the D/OTEC series. It builds on the foundational Technology in Distance and Online Theological Education course focusing on technology-related competencies for educators as defined by the Distance and Online Theological Education Competence framework (category F).

The specific competences developed in this course are:

    F.1.2 - Can explain the functions of virtual learning environments (VLE) in D/OTE

    F.1.3 - Can provide examples of online tools and how to use them.

NOTE: This course uses the term learning management system (LMS) throughout, which is a synonym for for virtual learning environments (VLE)

Authentic Assessment in D/OTE

This advanced nano-course extends on the aspect of evaluation of learning found in the Pedagogy foundational course

The specific competencies developed in this course are: 

  • B.3.2 - Can use a variety of D/OTE tools for assessment with a specific focus on designing an authentic assessment task

  • B.3.3 - Can implement best practices in assessment feedback to D/OTE students

Leading and Implementing Online Programs in Theological Schools

This advanced nano-course builds on the Professionality in D/OTE foundational course. It will equip you to assess the readiness of your institution for change and devise a plan with prioritised next steps for implementing online learning programs in theological education. 

This course is for participants in leadership roles who have input into decisions about distance/online education at their institution (e.g., principals, deans, learning coordinators, administrators, IT coordinators).

This course introduces the Distance and Online Theological Education Competence (D/OTEC) framework, composed of 7 categories and 21 specific competences.  This first, preparatory course in the Foundations in D/OTEC series and is suited for all institutions and theological educators involved in distance and online education, regardless of their experience and current level of engagement.
